Auspicious Rabbits and the Moon in Chinese Culture
In the traditional Chinese calendar, the rabbit corresponds to Mao (卯) among the Twelve Earthly Branches. Ancient texts describe the rabbit as a symbol of purity, renewal, and gentle vitality.
In Chinese folklore, the Jade Rabbit lives on the moon, preparing the elixir of immortality — a timeless image associated with harmony, longevity, and good fortune.
This symbolism forms the narrative foundation of the design.

Carved Motifs Beneath a Soft Celadon Glaze
The cup features a decorative band beneath the rim, where rabbits are depicted in various postures — crouching, leaping, running, and gazing upward. These lively figures are paired with traditional scrolling foliage and broken-branch peony motifs, elements commonly found in classic Yaozhou ware.
Rather than painted on the surface, the patterns are carved into the clay body, allowing the celadon glaze to pool gently within the lines during firing. As light moves across the surface, the imagery slowly reveals itself — subtle, layered, and deeply tactile.

The vessel follows a harmonious traditional profile:
a gently inward-turned rim, short neck, full shoulder, curved wall, and rounded foot.
The handle is a defining feature. Using a simplified outline, the rabbit’s head and body are transformed into an ergonomic handle that fits naturally in the hand. This thoughtful design enhances stability and comfort while adding a quiet sense of playfulness to everyday use.

The accompanying tray echoes the theme of the moon. At its center, a relief-carved osmanthus tree evokes the legendary lunar landscape of Guanghan Palace. Fine lines and restrained detailing bring the scene to life without overwhelming the surface.
A subtle gold accent along the rim adds warmth and balance, symbolizing harmony, reunion, and auspicious blessings.
