Description

The Guardian Beast of the Imperial Court

Flanking the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing’s Forbidden City stands a pair of mythical one-horned beasts — symbols of a wise and virtuous ruler. Their presence signifies an emperor who understands affairs across the world, governs with clarity, and commands harmony from all directions.

This guardian is known as Luduan, a legendary creature in Chinese mythology.

According to ancient texts, including the Book of Song, Luduan is said to travel great distances in a single day, understand the languages of distant lands, and appear only during the reign of enlightened rulers — delivering messages and offering protection.

The Form and Symbolism of Luduan

Over centuries, the image of Luduan evolved. Early descriptions resemble a horned animal similar to ox or boar, while later depictions from the Ming and Qing dynasties grew closer to the form of the qilin.

Classical records describe Luduan as a powerful composite creature:
a single horn, lion-like body, dragon back, round alert eyes, slightly open mouth, strong limbs, scaled texture, and a trailing tail. Though similar to the qilin, Luduan is distinguished by its solitary horn — a mark of singular authority and clarity.

Because it is believed to accompany only wise rulers, Luduan became a symbol of just governance, foresight, protection, and moral authority.

From Imperial Halls to Living Spaces

Luduan-shaped incense burners appeared as early as the Yuan dynasty and were widely used in palace settings. Beyond their practical use, they carried an aura of quiet power — serving as both functional objects and symbolic guardians.

In this celadon incense burner, the Luduan stands proudly with head raised and eyes wide, its presence calm yet commanding. When incense is lit, fragrant smoke rises gently from the creature’s mouth, creating a scene that feels both mystical and composed.

Sculptural Design with Functional Craft

The design follows traditional structure:

  • The head functions as the removable lid

  • The body forms the incense chamber, hollow inside

  • The single horn, upright ears, and strong stance emphasize vigilance and strength

Crafted in Yaozhou-style celadon, the glaze softens the powerful form with a calm green tone, balancing authority with elegance.

A Symbolic Object for Study and Home

In later scholarly traditions, Luduan was often placed on desks alongside qilin figures, symbolizing “the sage ruler in position, messages arriving from afar.” Because Luduan is said to understand all languages, it became associated with protection, clarity of communication, and auspicious presence.

Today, this incense burner serves as:

  • A contemplative object for study or meditation spaces

  • A symbolic guardian for the home

  • A refined cultural gift carrying deep historical meaning

More Than an Incense Burner

This is not merely a vessel for fragrance, but a sculptural embodiment of wisdom, vigilance, and harmony. As incense smoke rises softly from the Luduan’s mouth, ancient beliefs quietly re-enter modern life — calm, dignified, and enduring.
