The Pomegranate: A Symbol Carried from the Silk Road
Historical records note that during the Han dynasty, Zhang Qian’s expedition to the Western Regions brought pomegranate seeds back to China, where the fruit became known as “Anshi pomegranate.”
Over centuries, the pomegranate developed rich symbolic meaning in Chinese culture—
representing abundance, unity, prosperity, and enduring friendship.
In autumn, gifting pomegranates was a gesture of goodwill and emotional connection, making the fruit both a cultural and social symbol.

Sculpted Pomegranate Finial Lid
The lid finial is shaped using Yaozhou’s refined sculptural techniques.
Finished in a purple-gold glaze, it resembles a ripened pomegranate fruit—subtle, warm, and visually striking.
The finial is not merely decorative; it provides a comfortable grip while reinforcing the mug’s cultural narrative.
From Ancient Chang’an to Today: Cultural Continuity
In the Tang dynasty, the pomegranate was regarded as the city flower of Chang’an, symbolizing openness, vitality, and cosmopolitan spirit.
Today, the Qinling Mountains, stretching south of Xi’an, represent the region’s natural heritage.
The mountains are home to the renowned “Four Treasures of Qinling”:
Giant Panda
Golden Snub-nosed Monkey
Crested Ibis
Takin
These animals are widely regarded as symbols of harmony between humanity and nature.

The “Four Treasures of Qinling” Motif
The mug’s engraved decoration integrates these four animals into a flowing design language, expressing regional identity and emotional connection.
Crafted from natural mineral clay sourced north of the Wei River, the piece is shaped and fired using traditional Yaozhou kiln techniques, refined through water and fire.
The result is a contemporary mug that quietly conveys the cultural depth of Chang’an and Shaanxi.
Designed for Modern Daily Use
While rooted in historical symbolism, this mug is designed for everyday practicality—
suitable for tea, coffee, or warm beverages in both home and office settings.
