Silk, Tea, and the Birth of Global Exchange
More than two thousand years ago, ancient trade routes connected East and West across deserts and oceans.
Silk and tea traveled these paths, becoming cultural ambassadors long before the idea of globalization existed.
The silkworm—small, silent, yet transformative—stood at the center of this exchange.
Its thread carried not only fabric, but stories, knowledge, and civilization.
This incense holder draws inspiration from that legacy.

Historical Inspiration: The Gilded Bronze Silkworm
The design references the famous Western Han Dynasty gilded bronze silkworm, a nationally protected cultural treasure housed in Shaanxi History Museum.
Originally bestowed as an imperial symbol honoring sericulture, the ancient silkworm sculpture is admired for its compact form, refined posture, and lifelike elegance—its body arched as if mid-spinning silk.
Our piece reinterprets this historic form through ceramic artistry, honoring its cultural meaning while bringing it into contemporary daily life.
Design Concept: Tea Leaf & Golden Silkworm
The object consists of two integrated elements:
A tea-leaf-shaped tray, symbolizing cultivation, nature, and tea culture
A reclining gilded silkworm, resting gently upon the leaf
The silkworm’s body is sculpted with smooth, flowing contours and subtle relief, suggesting motion and vitality.
Its raised head expresses aspiration, continuity, and life’s quiet persistence.
At the base of the leaf, a discreet incense hole is designed for inserting stick incense—making the piece both functional and contemplative.

Craftsmanship & Material Expression
The tray is formed from natural mineral clay, fired at high temperature using traditional Yaozhou ceramic techniques.
The surface texture preserves subtle, organic details, while the serrated leaf edge echoes the irregular beauty of wild vegetation.
The silkworm is finished with gilded detailing, creating a refined contrast between warm gold and soft celadon green.
Together, they form a balanced composition—earth and light, stillness and movement.
A Cultural Object for Contemporary Tea Spaces
Designed for tea rooms, meditation spaces, and refined interiors, this incense holder enhances ritual moments with quiet symbolism.
It is not merely an incense accessory, but a sculptural reminder of how tea, silk, and ceramics once shaped global history—and continue to shape cultural identity today.
In 2024, this work received the Silver Award at the China Featured Tourism Goods Competition, recognizing its successful fusion of heritage and modern design.
