Description

1. Product Story / Craftsmanship

This handmade black Raku-style tea bowl represents one of the most sculptural and expressive works within the 28-Yaki ceramic series.

Built entirely by hand, the bowl combines a bold semi-cylindrical (“han-zutsu”) form with deeply tactile carved line textures that move organically across the surface. These shallow relief carvings create shifting shadows and visual rhythm, giving the vessel a strong architectural presence while preserving the warmth of handmade pottery.

The form is intentionally substantial in hand, echoing the powerful physical presence found in traditional tea ceremony bowls. Its proportions create a grounded, stable feeling during matcha preparation and tea practice.

The black glaze was chosen specifically for tea appreciation. During whisking, the deep dark surface dramatically highlights the vivid green color and foam texture of matcha, creating a striking visual contrast highly valued in tea ceremony aesthetics.

Beneath the glaze, the ceramic body carries subtle stone-like textures and age-inspired irregularities reminiscent of weathered ceramic surfaces and antique tea wares. This balance between refinement and raw materiality gives the piece a strong wabi-sabi atmosphere.

The broad foot design provides exceptional stability, while five visible shell spur marks remain intentionally preserved on the base — a detail traditionally associated with high-temperature ceramic firing and valued by collectors of handmade tea bowls.

Combining sculptural texture, ceremonial functionality, and contemporary ceramic expression, this piece is designed not only for preparing matcha, but also for long-term appreciation as a collectible chawan.

3. Artist Profile

You Shanzi, founder of Da You Tang Studio, is a ceramic artist and tea vessel collector with more than two decades of experience in East Asian tea culture.

After years of studying historical ceramics and tea traditions across China and Japan, he developed a distinctive understanding of hand-built pottery, tea ceremony vessels, and wood-fired aesthetics. His works emphasize not only functionality, but also tactile depth, visual atmosphere, and the emotional presence created during tea practice.

The “28-Yaki” series was established in Chang’an. Its name derives from an ancient bronze-script variation of the Chinese character “玄” (Xuan), whose form visually resembles the numbers 2 and 8. The series represents a fusion of ceramic tradition, tea philosophy, and contemporary handmade expression.
