Description

1. Product Story / Craftsmanship

This handmade wood-fired Baoping teapot embodies the compact and highly tactile spirit of contemporary Gongfu tea practice.

Created entirely by hand within the 28-Yaki ceramic tradition, the teapot preserves visible traces of shaping, attachment, and firing — giving the piece an unmistakably handmade presence filled with warmth and individuality.

Its refined square lid knob serves as the visual focal point of the piece. In contrast to the organic asymmetry of the body, the geometric lid detail introduces a quiet sense of balance and precision, making the teapot both sculptural and highly functional.

The asymmetrical cloud-pattern side attachments further enhance the vessel’s high-antique character while improving heat resistance during use.

Wood-fired in a traditional kiln, the surface develops naturally through flame exposure, ash interaction, and mineral transformation. Variations in texture, carbon markings, and kiln coloration emerge unpredictably during firing, ensuring that no two pieces are ever identical.

With a compact 100ml capacity, this Baoping form is especially suitable for focused Gongfu tea sessions for one or two people. The breathable clay body performs particularly well with Dancong oolong, Yancha (rock tea), and other highly aromatic teas, helping preserve fragrance and aftertaste throughout multiple infusions.

Its carefully refined spout delivers smooth pouring and exceptional water cut-off, supporting precise brewing control in daily tea practice.

Small in scale yet rich in atmosphere, this piece represents the intimate side of wood-fired handmade teaware.

3. Artist Profile

You Shanzi, founder of Da You Tang Studio, is a ceramic artist and tea vessel collector with more than two decades of experience in East Asian tea culture.

After years of studying historical ceramics and tea traditions across China and Japan, he developed a distinctive understanding of hand-built pottery and wood-fired aesthetics. His works emphasize not only visual expression, but also tactile experience, pouring performance, and the emotional atmosphere created during tea practice.

The “28-Yaki” series was established in Chang’an. Its name derives from an ancient bronze-script variation of the Chinese character “玄” (Xuan), whose form visually resembles the numbers 2 and 8. The series represents a fusion of ceramic tradition, tea philosophy, and contemporary handmade expression.
